The ones to remember

Most things cats come across are harmless. A few are deadly in tiny amounts, and they’re in ordinary homes:

LiliesEvery part, even pollen and vase water. Kidney failure.
ParacetamolEven a small dose can kill. Never give human painkillers.
Dog flea dropsMany contain permethrin, often deadly to cats.
AntifreezeSweet-tasting. A teaspoon can kill.
Onions and garlicDamage red blood cells, even cooked into leftovers.
OleanderA common garden shrub that affects the heart.

Feeding street cats

Leftovers are kind, but they often hide onion, garlic, salt or cooked bones. Cat food is cheaper than you’d think and much safer. Here’s what to feed street cats, and our full guide to what’s poisonous to cats.

This checker is general information, not veterinary advice. Every cat is different, and an amount that’s fine for one may not be for a kitten or a cat that’s ill. If a cat has eaten something and you’re worried, call a vet.
