The best clues
No single sign is perfect, because kittens grow at different speeds, and street kittens are often small for their age. Use two or three together:
| Eyes shut, ears folded | Under 2 weeks. |
|---|---|
| Tiny front teeth, wobbly walk | About 3 weeks. |
| Steady, playing, trying food | 4 to 5 weeks. |
| Eyes changing from blue | From about 6 or 7 weeks. |
| About 1 kg, fully weaned | Around 8 weeks. |
| Big adult fangs coming in | About 4 to 7 months. |
The teeth are the most reliable clue. Our kitten age chart goes week by week, with vaccines, worming and neutering.
Found a kitten on its own?
Don’t pick it up yet. Its mother is usually close by, out finding food. Watch from far away for a few hours. Step in sooner if it’s cold, weak, hurt or in danger. Our guide to found kittens explains how to tell.
This is a rough guess, not a vet check. A vet can tell a kitten’s age much more closely, and should see any kitten you take in.
