What is your cat actually saying?

“Tap a sound.”

Why cats meow at us

Grown cats hardly meow at each other. Kittens meow to their mother, and cats keep doing it with people because it works: we answer. Every cat ends up with its own little language with its own humans, so the same meow can mean something different in your house.

Street cats meow less than pets. They talk with their bodies instead, so if you meet one, our cat mood decoder will tell you more than its voice.

Hear a kitten mewing on its own? Its mother is usually close by. Our guide to found kittens explains when to step in.

A cat that suddenly meows or yowls much more than usual, especially an older cat, may be unwell. If something changes, ask a vet.

Heard one on your street? Go and say hello.
